You can dress up or dress down as you see fit. Our judges will be evaluating your style, costume, voice and uniqueness. Looking like a pirate will certainly help your chances of winning! The number one rule of the day is to have fun! There's a rumor that Pirates had a sense of humor! A Pirate name is a must!
The judges will be looking for creativity in your presentation, voice and vocabulary, a Ripley attitude, and of course overall appearance, so it might be a good idea to put on an eye patch, wrap a scarf around your head, and put a parrot on your shoulder! You can't look TOO much like a pirate for our tastes! You'll be asked to get on stage and talk like a pirate for 30-seconds or less. There is no cost to enter and every participant gets a free pass for the aquarium.
Having a good time talking like a pirate is more important at Ripley's than being historically accurate! And hey, in real life, real pirates really didn't talk like we think they did. Actor Robert Newton, playing Long John Silver in the 1950 Walt Disney movie, Treasure Island, was the first to play a pirate with the swaggering vocal intonations that we now associate with piratize. Single handedly and somewhat piratical, Newton defined our present day concept of the quintessential and stereotypical pirate!
It's easy and you can even make up words, we probably won't know the difference! To start with, say "ye' for you, "me" for my or mine, and don't be sparing with the "ahoy's" and "arrrrrs!"
