Destination Education Features

Grade level programs that are
available to school groups are:

Pre-K and Primary Programs

  • Wiggles, Jiggles and Giggles (Pre-school) – Dance like a dolphin and swim like a ray as we explore the wonderful world of sea creatures through movement and music.
  • Fish Tales (Pre-School) - Aquariuim educators encourage literacy by reading marine themed books with young students while using sea life to learn about the creatures they are reading about.  This interactive program is excellent for young children.
  • Animal House (Pre-K – K) – Students will learn about animal homes and habitats by placing sea creatures in their ideal home.
  • Touch and Tell (Grades K-2) – Students, while blindfolded, will reach into our magic box using only their sense of touch to determine the sea creature inside.
  • Beach Creature Bingo (Grades K-3) – Using the popular game Bingo, students learn about ocean inhabitants that they might see while walking along the beach. Prizes are awarded and everyone is a winner!
  • What am I? (Grades 1 – 3) – Magnified images of colorful ocean creatures are presented to the students who have to guess the creature’s identity. Clues are given and educational facts are uncovered in this fun activity.
  • Beach Creatures (Grades 1-3) – Students learn amazing information about some of the sea life that they may encounter both in the aquarium and on the area’s beaches. This hands-on program gets students up close and personal with marine life.

Elementary and Middle School Programs

  • NEW FOR 2007! Pirates (Grades 3rd - 6th) - Do you have the skills to be a pirate captain on Ripley's Revenge?  Explore the myths and mysteries surrounding pirate lore.  Put your knowledge to the test against your fellow classmates to see who is the best captain and who will "walk the plank"!
  • Pollution Revolution (Grades 4-8) – This interactive program challenges students to be creative in cleaning up an oceanic oil spill. Throughout the challenge, students learn about the effects of pollution on marine and land animals.
  • Sharks (Grades 4 – 8) – Students will learn fascinating facts about some of the different types of sharks that inhabit our oceans. They will leave with an understanding of the important part that sharks play in our ocean’s ecosystem and why it is important to protect them.
  • Will it Float? (Grades 5 – 8) – Students compete to build their own vessel that will stay afloat as they learn the concepts of buoyancy and water displacement. The group that creates the best design that will stay afloat under “Stressful” conditions will win!
  • Whales and Dolphins (Grades 4 –8) – Students will enjoy learning about the wonder and grace of the ocean’s gentle giants and playful dolphins while gaining an understanding of the important part that they play in the ocean and to man.
  • Ocean Challenge (Grades 4-8) – Through an electronic “Jeopardy” game, students test their knowledge by giving answers to questions in several areas of marine science. Questions are adapted to each grade level.
  • Amphibians (Grades 4th - 8th) - Join our education team as they explore some our slimy friends that breathe in air and water! Students will learn about the life cycles and habitats of amphibians while viewing incredible images of the animals.


Middle and High School Programs

  • Shark Attack! (Grades 5 – 12) – Uncover the truth behind the myth that sharks are ferocious predators who prey on helpless vacationers in the ocean. They will learn about the types of sharks that may be more prone to attacks, how to protect themselves and how often shark attacks really do occur.
  • Ocean Oddities (Grades Many Species of marine life exhibit behaviors that may seem strange and unusal.  Generally, these behaviors are a reaction to their environment and are used for survival.  Join us in exploring these eccenticities for a sneak peek at what occurs beneath the waves!  Many of the species featured can be found at Ripley's Aquarium.
  • The Deep Sea (Grades 6 – 10) – Students will learn about the bizarre and unusual life forms that inhabit our deep oceans while learning about adaptations and bioluminescence.
  • Sea Turtles (Grades 6 – 10) – Did you know that out of seven species of sea turtle found worldwide, that five of them can be found along the Carolina coasts? Discover the feeding and nesting habits of the beautiful creatures while learning what can be done to save them.
  • Coral Reefs (Grades 6 – 12) – Discover some of nature’s most abundant sources of life and beauty among the oceans coral reefs. Students will explore these delicate ecosystems while learning the importance of protecting and preserving them.
  • Oceans Past and Present (Grades 9 –12) – Travel back in time with us to an age thousands of years before dinosaurs. Explore changes in the Earth’s continents and oceans while discovering some of the pre-historic creatures that inhabited the oceans.
  • Carolina Shores and Wetlands (Grades 9-12) – This program addresses conservation and protection on a local level. Students will be taken on a virtual tour of our local wetlands to discover how humans have impacted the life and populations that call these areas home.
  • Ocean Challenge (Grades 9-12) – Through an electronic “Jeopardy” game, students test their knowledge by giving answers to questions in several areas of marine science. Questions are adapted to each grade level.
  • Careers at the Aquarium (Grades 9-12) – This vocational program exposes students to the wide variety of career options available at the aquarium and the educational requirements necessary for those positions.
